In brief: We're launching an ST-based version of the ErgoDox EZ on Sept 1, 2024. There's a coupon code for 10% off the existing (Teensy) version while supplies last.

The ErgoDox EZ is how we got our start in 2015, with an Indiegogo campaign. It's nearly ten years old.

Another company would maybe retire it — cease support, label it as a "legacy" product. It's certainly been selling less than the Moonlander and Voyager. If we just look at the numbers, a move like that would make sense.

We will not be doing that.

We've kept supporting the ErgoDox EZ in Oryx, making the original hardware more and more capable over time. What an ErgoDox EZ can do today is miles beyond what the same unit could do at launch. So if you bought a unit in 2015, it just kept getting vastly better, with zero costs to you. I still regularly hear from original backers of the Indiegogo who are enjoying their ErgoDox EZs today.

But we didn't just keep improving the firmware over the years: We also kept investing in the hardware. The ErgoDox EZ got "hot swap" keyswitch sockets in 2017, making it one of the first keyboards to ever use them. This required a bunch of new tooling: We changed the bottom of the keyboard to include supports for the hotswap sockets. Then in 2022, we switched the ErgoDox EZ from mini USB to Type C, requiring another investment in the tooling.

Today, I'm excited to share that as of Sept 1, 2024 we will be shipping all ErgoDox EZ units with the same processor we use on the Moonlander and the Voyager. This is not just a faster processor, but an entirely different architecture (moving from Atmel to STM). It also increases the ErgoDox EZ's memory from 32kb to 256kb — a 8x increase, allowing for much more complex layouts. Any layout (and any feature) that works on the Moonlander and Voyager will work on the new ErgoDox EZ ST.

Some things stay the same

Three things are not changing:

  1. The ErgoDox EZ is a great split ergonomic keyboard. It's just a good design. It's comfortable to use, reliable, and easy to repair. That core design stays exactly the same, because it is so good.

  2. The price. How many products do you know which have kept the same price since 2016 (after "early bird pricing") ended? It's kind of crazy, and not very smart from a pure business perspective, but it is important for me to keep the price the same for as long as we possibly can. If you factor in inflation, the ErgoDox EZ got quite a bit cheaper over time.

  3. Our commitment to support this keyboard across all of its generations. We're in this for the long haul.

Coupon code

While supplies last and before we switch over on Sept 1, you can still get the Teensy-based version (32KB of memory). And we're doing something we almost never do: offering a discount.

The coupon code is give-me-the-old-processor and it will give you 10% off the unit itself (not including legs, Wing, and other accessories). Get all the way to the checkout page, and you'll find a coupon field there.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for supporting ZSA for almost a decade! ❤️
